What should I do with my cat, any new suggestions?

17 July 2009 3 Comments

I made the mistake and took in a stray cat in august. Since then my 7 year old cat had constant hair loss. I brought her to the vet and his 1st diagnosis was a yeast or bacterial infection. I applied antibiotics and it did not get better. Then I found all of a sudden fleas on her. I brought her back to the vet and he gave her frontline. Prolem the forntline did not make it better. After 3 weeks I took her back and he applied frontline again, I still found fleas. I finally applied advantage and it she was getting better. Her scabs are healing and the scars are starting to grow hair. Now I realized small bumps on her scars. Is this normal due to the scars? When I comb her I get lots of dead skin and some hair. I had her tested my by vet for ear mites and fungus twice. It was negative. Do I just have a bad vet? The problem isas soon as I try to get my cat out of the house she pees and poops and gets all acted up. So I cannot take her on long car rides.
Actually, I’m not sorry I took the stra in. I just wish I would have known what could happen. I only had one indoor cat and I got her because people wanted to take her down. I’m moved a lot in my live through various countries and taking the full responsibility for 1 cat was all I could take. Well now I have a second one and I adore him too. He actually snuck himself in playing with my cat when I was not in the fenced yard watching her. Then he took food…. Then I treated him for fleas, took him to the vet and one nght he just jumped in went up the stairs right to the bed looking at me saying, I want to stay. Of course now I know I shoudl ahve ensured he is alright.
For his history: the stray went arount the whole neighbourhood begging for food and water. Everybody knew him nobody wanted to take car of him. So I had to step up. right? I could not let him suffer. In the beginning he would just stay 1 hour and leave and I would check if he would be outside every hour of the nght……

The bumps, scabs and loss of fur are where the fleas bit her. Any tiny black scabby looking things are flea droppings. The bumps and scabs will go away eventually. The fur should also grow back as well. It might be a good idea to give her a quick bath some day soon. That way, the flea residue that is still on her skin and in her fur would be removed. You can use a shampoo especially for cats. Or, you could use a mild shampoo such as baby shampoo. Remember to rinse her well to get all the soap and flea residue out of her fur.A little combing or brushing would help also. As far as the vet goes, I would say he either doesn’t know what he is doing, or, he is just making money for him self. Consider looking for another veterinarian. He should have picked up on the fleas first thing by taking a flea comb to the cat for a few minutes. And should have known what to do as well. I wish you luck and hope your kitty does well.

your cats symptoms sound a lot like my cat nico’s issues. he got fleas from a dog. i had no idea what they looked like until then. nico was obsessed with licking and cleaning himself. he became terrified of everyone who came over. he had scabs all over his neck. i thought he was gonna die! my vet said he had an allergic reaction to the flea bites. the vet shaved his neck to help the scabs breathe better and i had to put ointment on them. he gave me some prescription shampoo. it sucked because u have to leave it on your cat for 10 minutes-like that is an easy task! but it made a big difference. he also gave me some kitty anxiety pills to give nico. after that first encounter with fleas i have been using revolution flea treatment on nico in one day he was 100 times better than before. he did lose a lot of hair during his nervous breakdown but it has slowly grown back. ever since then he does not like any houseguests that stop by. he approaches them and rubs on them then bites! he did not do that before the fleas. i hope your cat gets better too. i know it breaks your heart to feel helpless. if u doubt your vet get a second even 3rd opinion.

It is not a mistake to take in a stray that needs a home and food. What you did wrong is not quarantine the kitty. You have to keep the kitty in room by itself for 2 weeks and take it to the vet for a check up.
Then you have to introduce the kitties slowly and with help like Rescue Remedy or Feliway to reduce the stress. Then the kitties would adapt to each other better and stress free.
