Is it common to lose hair a few months after surgery?

I’ve looked all over the internet for an answer to this but I’m still not sure.

A few months ago I was in a car accident and soon there after went through a femur reconstructive surgery. I was put under general anesthesia and the surgery went well, but after 3 months or so i began to notice that my hair was coming out at an unusually high rate. If I just run my hand through my hair I will usually get anywhere from 2 to 10 hairs.. I’ve seen that surgery and hair loss commonly go hand in hand with women, but does it effect men too? I’m 18 now, and my father is bald and went bald in his early 30′s if it makes a difference but i dont think it is male pattern baldness because it is fairly uniform throughout my scalp..

Any help would be appreciated.
