My 12 year old cat is suffering from hair loss….why?

My cat is 12 years old and she has always had a nice thick long haired coat but all of a sudden I have noticed that she is suffering from hair loss especially on her sides and around her behind(I can see her skin) .Could it be age related? Do older cats lose their fur? Any opinions? Thanks in advance

    Your Answer:
Cat lose hair for a wide variety of reasons. It could be a hormonal deficiency, or she could be overgrooming, have a food allergy, or a condition for which hairloss is a symptom.

Without a visit to the vet it would be impossible to even guess at what could be wrong with your cat.

The resource link below lists many reasons for hair loss. The more common ones are highlighted in grey.

My suggestion is to make an appointment with your vet as soon as possible so diagnosis and treatment can be started. Your cat is 12 years old, which, while a senior, is not considered to be "elderly".

So get thee to the vet ASAP and good luck.

    Hope this helps,

Is she grooming more than usual? Maybe it’s fleas or an allergy to a new food.
One of my cats grooms the fur right off his butt when the fleas get really bad, but Advantage takes care of it pretty quickly.

she could also be overgrooming herself for some reason. Some cats start doing this and they lose their fur in patches. She could also be developing food allergies. My cat Storm will loose fur on his ears and surrounding areas because he’s allergic to fish. It makes him very itchy and he scratches it until he loses patches of fur. I hope that you’ll be able to find out what her problem is and that it’s not serious. Please continue to keep us updated about her.

That happened to my cat a few winters ago. It could be caused by overgrooming, or since she’s a long hair, it could be undergrooming causing matted fur that she is pulling loose (which happened to a male long hair of mine who wouldn’t let you within a mile if you had a brush, scissors, or a trimmer). It could also be fleas. Or she might just have a severe case of dry skin. Try getting a bottle of spray on hydrocortisone spray in the cat section of your local pet store or even KMart or Walmart (or whatever store you have). My cat was completely bald on her back legs and butt, and within two weeks, she was regrowing hair.

Has anything in her world changed? Like a new living situation or something? That can cause a lot of stress on cats, which is also a reason for fur loss…

If you try the spray and it doesn’t work, your best bet is to call the vet and ask for advice. Good luck to you!

Hi. I came across you question and all the answers that were given to you. Yes, it could be an allergic reaction to food or many other reasons. I had a cat years ago that got into fiberglass. Funny thing is the cat did not itch or scratch, but we sure did. It took us some detective work to figure out what it was. I would not want to speculate what it could or could not be. My suggestion is to take her to a vet. The vets are trained in the maintenance and care of animals. They should be able to find out what the problem is. Also, they can rule out other causes that you may be wasting you time on. Your precious cat will appreciate a quick and precise solution too. There are many vets that charge less than others. You could call first to find out what the office visit is. You can go from there to decide what your choices are.
Hope this helps. Good luck to you and your cat.
