Losing hair in the shower??

9 July 2009 8 Comments

Hello ya’ll. I’m a 20 year old male so I find this very suspicious. Lately I’ve been losing hair in the shower at an abnormally high rate…about 20-40 strands at a time. I don’t use any product, and my shampoo is head and shoulders, which I’ve used without issue for two years.

Is this normal? Can the average regrowth rate make up for this loss, or should I go see a specialist?

ps: I know they say you normally lose 100 hairs a day, but this has just started for me. Usually I see about 5 strands in the drain/my hand and leave it at that. I’m not scrubbing harder than normal either. Maybe it has to do with growing up?

If you’re not vigorously scrubbing, combing, or brushing your hair, that shouldn’t be happening and it is not normal.. I know I lose a lot of hair in the shower, but that’s because I have very long/thick hair and have to brush it roughly.. I would recommend seeing a doctor or hairloss professional about it if it gets worse, or if you notice any patches in your hair or visible scalp. It’s not normal for males to lose hair at 20 years old.

Its simple, as your hair grows and becomes different as you grow older you loose some hair in the shower. Don’t freak out. Change your shampoo and conditioner to a gentler one, and don’t wash your hair as much. Every other day is fine, or maybe even twice a week, but make sure that you use conditioner to keep your hair from getting dry and crack so it falls out. Good Luck!!~!!

Bad news son…check your pillow as well. Noticing hair in the hands, in the drain, on the pillow, and on your shirts is usually an indication that your losing your hair. It’s an unfortunate part of life for us males (and some females.) Try Rogaine, it can help. I’ve used a product called Nioxin for years. It doesn’t regrow hair, but it helps thicken that hair you do have and make it healthier to slow the receeding process.

Also depending on how long your hair is and no you can loose up too a thousand a day my hair is long and when i shower i loose a lot. But also When you keep it up like in a ponytail you loose more form the pull of it.

I don’t know about men…but in WOmen’s Health magazine I read an article stating that it is normal to lose up to 100 stnads of hair a day. And unless you are seeing bald spots, the hair loss is normal. It’s possible tha you have a vitamin difficiency, a thyroid disorder, or high level of stress. Certain medicines can also cause hair loss.

Male pattern baldness (MPB) is genetics. You may not see them from your parents, but your grandparents from either mom or dad side might have it to pass on. If your case is MPB, then there’s not a lot that you can do to stop it, but you can do a lot to slow it down.

Watch this Dateline NBC video report. It reviewed 5 products and might give you an idea –

You will go bald, this is never a good sign. Shave it off, and try not to be too depressed. There is life after hair loss, and a lot of girls really dig the look. If the hair loss is not excessive, then you may have nothing to worry about since every man loses at least one hundred hairs a day, so unless you have noticed something else, you probably have nothing to worry about.
