INFORMATION..on cancer?

15 July 2009 8 Comments

hi, im a 15 year old and i plan on studing meds in unversity and becdoming a doctor…i have recently beenreading comments about cancer and there is one answer that i havent seen yet

IS THERE A CURE FOR SPECFIC CANCER?

what people dont relize is that Cancer takes the form of many different forms and cannot be treated by a flick of the wrist.
the current nethods are radiation therapy and kemo
therapy,

the difference
Radiation- destroys all cells in the infected area, resulting in controled destruction of the cells, some risks involved are it has in some cases lead to other tumors but is by far the best treatment avaliable

kemo- destroys the bodys cells (ex. hair loss), used in widespread cancer, some risks, some cells might not be able to reproduce anymore which could lead to health problems and death in rare cases.

i hope this has cleared the air about some things.

Hi doctor smoky780. Congratulations on becoming a doctor. However, you sound very negative towards the treatments available for cancer patients. There is a cure for cancer when detected early and when surgically removed. Radiation cleans up the surgery site, while chemo therapy is a systemic treatment, which kills microscopic cancer cells. You should remember, that there a different kinds of Chemo (systemic treatments) for specific cancers and not all of them causes hair loss. Every cancer patient is fortunate, that there are treatments available which might cause problems down the road. But what’s the alternative by not getting treated? You need to change your attitude toward cancer treatments, because, that’s the only hope cancer patients have at this point. You are 15 years old and your spelling is horrible and worse than mine and I come from a different country. This is not a put down, but you need to work harder on your spelling or hit the Spell button on your computer. Good luck and god bless you. And by the way, chemo therapy is not only used for metastasized cancers it is also used as an additional therapy to kill of microscopic cancer cells. You are definately right, not all cells reproduce and those are unfortunately brain cells.

    chemo* not kemo

Not trying to point out your flaws here or anything, but if anybody was going to look stuff up, it would help them to spell it right. People will ask the same questions anyway, too. I see the same questions here day in and day out. Who uses the search feature? Nobody. They should start, though.

    Dear Dr smoky780

Welcome to one of the most difficult yet most rewarding careers out there. I am a surgery resident
I just need to say, that what you said is generally true, yet n reality it is very complicated. some cancers are now pretty curable. while others remain a problem. the future carry many promises.

Use of stem cells are for curing cancers is also being tried. I myself am getting ready to go through a stem cell transplant for leukemia. They will kill all my bone marrow with radiation and chemo, and then transfuse two cord blood units (the blood from the unbilical cord and afterbirth of a baby). THe stem cells in the units will graft in my bones and start regrowing new bone marrow and blood cells. It is the best chance at a long term cure that I have.

Stem cells are also being tried and treating lots of other cancers and diseases. When using adult stem cells or cord blood there are no controversial topics, and it is all donated.
