Ivomec, or ivermectin, which is something already in heartworm preventative is a common remedy for demodex. Demodectic mange is never contagious...sarcoptic mange is..also known as scabies. Demodectic mange is a genetic disorder that is passed on, and therefore means some pugs, as well as any other dog, may be prone to it based on genetics. Suppression of the immune system is something that causes the demodex to emerge. Sulfur based dips also help treat demodex.

Wow, ok where do I begin? Last year alone I personally watched MANY puppies die or struggle to survive the deadly Parvo virus. Several of whom never had follow up booster vaccinations. The oldest of those dogs was a 2 year old dog who had only had one accination when it was 8 weeks old. Demodectic mange IS NOT the result of the body over reacting to attack dust mites on the body. it IS however the result of a dog having a genetically weak immune system allowing the demodectic mites that naturally live on the body to take over. I do not personally know of a vet, and I have been an RVT for 10 years who uses steroids as a treatment for demodex!!!!!!!!!!!!! We see many pugs at our practice and one of our veterinarians actually sits on the board for our local pug rescue and we do not have an issue with pugs and vaccines. Don't be foolish and fall for the false security of titer testing. It is a PROVEN fact that all dog respond to vaccinations differently and to assume that because some dogs have a longer lasting immune response to a vaccine that it is safe to roll the dice and assume that your dog will as well. This stupid titer thing always pisses me off because I have seen first hand what can happen to under vaccinated animals.
