I been suffering from Alopecia for a couple of years, on and off. I have a patch of hair that falls out from the back of my head near the neckline then grows back, but the hair that grows back is very coarse and after a couple of months falls out again. I have tried all types of steroids prescribed by the doctor, but with no result. Recently my left eyebrow seems to be losing hair and I have become very concerned. Can anyone please help and tell me the reason for this type of hair loss and also a cure! My husband seems to think its because I don’t eat properly, but the doctor said its stress related. Why do doctors always say that?

Current evidence suggests that alopecia areata is caused by an abnormality in the immune system. This particular abnormality leads to autoimmunity. As a result, the immune system attacks particular tissues of the body. In alopecia areata, for unknown reasons, the body’s own immune system attacks the hair follicles and disrupts normal hair formation. Biopsies of affected skin show immune cells inside of the hair follicles where they are not normally present. What causes this is unknown. Alopecia areata is sometimes associated with other autoimmune conditions such as allergic disorders, thyroid disease, vitiligo, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. Sometimes, alopecia areata occurs within family members, suggesting a role of genes and heredity.
A study reported in the journal Archives of Dermatology (vol. 134, 1998;1349-52) showed effectiveness of aromatherapy essential oils (cedarwood, lavender, thyme, and rosemary oils) in some patients. As with many chronic disorders for which there is no single treatment, a variety of remedies are promoted which in fact have no benefit. There is no known effective method of prevention, although the elimination of emotional stress is felt to be helpful.

FYI, eating properly has nothing to do with it. I have systemic lupus and my hair falls off quite a bit, grows back, but fortunately it’s not coarse.
Good Luck and try not to stress. Stress doesn’t help when you have a chronic disease.
I got this from WebMd. It’s about Alopecia. I hope it helps.

Cheers
it can be caused by stress…. so maybe its a sign to start slowing down and take a bit more care of yourself
It occurs more frequently in people who have affected family members, suggesting that heredity may be a factor.[1] In addition, it is slightly more likely to occur in people who have relatives with autoimmune diseases.[4]
The condition is thought to be an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks its own hair follicles and suppresses or stops hair growth. There is evidence that T cell lymphocytes cluster around these follicles, causing inflammation and subsequent hair loss. An unknown environmental trigger such as emotional stress or a pathogen is thought to combine with hereditary factors to cause the condition.
