Lycium chinense
The fruit of the matrimony vine or Chinese boxthorn sometimes called boxthorn berries. The soft, slightly bitter leaves are used in soups or cooked with pork. The berries have a pleasant, slightly sweet taste and while not adding strong flavour, blend with other seasonings and add a touch of bright colour. For tonic purposes they are mainly added to soup or congee. Sold dried in packets.
Medicinal uses: In Chinese medicine wolfberries are believed to help both vision and kidney function. Publications dealing with medicinal properties of plants reveal that the berries are indeed rich in carotene so the claim of improving eyesight does have some nutritional basis.
