My Dr. prescribed it for me today as well as a thyroid panel…I guess I'm not making the connection, how would spironolactone help me not lose hair?

Alopecia is, by definition, hair loss. But there are different types of alopecia. You may have meant hair loss that was not "male pattern baldness".
Anyway, androgenic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss in women. The drug spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic which also seems to have anti-androgenic activity. This is why it is used to treat hormonal hair loss in women.
